A Singapore heritage icon, shophouses began in 1822 and are narrow, small terraced houses, with sheltered ‘five-foot’ pedestrian walkways. In the past, they served as both business establishments and homes. Of the various shophouse styles, the Late Style is the most notable, with its eclectic mix of Chinese, Malay and European influences. They can be found in the neighbourhoods of Katong, Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar and Emerald Hill.
