A Singapore icon, the Merlion is depicted as a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Legend has it that a memorable encounter with a lion upon arrival on the island inspired him to name it Singapura which means “Lion City”. The “Mer” in Merlion describes the sea, as Singapore used to be a fishing village, and “Lion” is based on the aforementioned legend.
